This term we are studying where our food comes from and how it is made. To get some hands-on experience, Year 3 have been making some of their own shortbread and cornish pasties for their homework; which has helped us to think about how the food we cook and eat everyday has travelled ’from Farm to Fork’. It looks as though we have some budding Master Chefs in Year 3!

Take a look at the pictures below and let us know what you think. You may even want to try and make your own! If you do, you can follow the recipes given below – just make sure you have an adult to help you with any cooking you do:

It has been a tale of two cities recently in Year 4, as our History studies recently have led us to investigate the rival city-states of Athens and Sparta. The topic of Ancient Greece has really enthused boys in Year 4 this term, and is sure to involve more adventures as the term goes on. As part of the topic, boys have been made ‘citizens’ in either Athens or Sparta, and have been tasked with writing a speech about why their assigned city-state has the better society.

Take a look at the photos and videos below to find out more, and cast your vote! I would beware of the consequences of voting against Sparta though… they are not renowned for friendliness towards their enemies!

This term in History, Year 4 have been learning about the Ancient Egyptians and how they lived. To gain a greater idea of what the ruling Egyptian Pharaohs would have gone through, we re-enacted our own mummifications!

1. Pharaoh Eoin III being mummified by Embalmer Sammy:

2. Pharaoh Fahad II being mummified by Embalmers Andrew and Anthony.

3. A rather sombre-looking Pharaoh Thomas has been expertly wrapped-up by Embalmer Joshua.

4. Pharoah Ted II is mummified by Embalmer James, as scribe Harry looks on:

5. An entire family of Egyptian royalty lies waiting to be embalmed and placed inside the Great Pyramid of Nottingham:

Let us know what you think of our mummification technique, and maybe you could try this at home (all you need is a toilet roll)!

Hindu temple visit report

On Wednesday 5th October, year 4 went to a Hindu temple.

Here are some of the things we learnt: We take off our shoes before entering the shrine hall to give respect and in return we get prashad, a fruit or vegetable. (Ex. apple, banana, carrot). We will always be quiet because prayers will be going on and other people will not want to be interrupted.

One of the Hindu sayings are physical, sutble, casual. Physical means full life and body, Sutble means very small, very soft and causal means just cells. Aum means devotion when needed, knowledge when needed and action when needed. Some people believe God lives in the sky, heaven or space but he actually lives in our hearts. A temple is where people from Hinduism come to learn and pray. Sometimes when people are in a bad situation, they come to the temple to pray and ask god for help. (Geeta)

Hinduism is one of the oldest religions on the living planet. Hindus treat cows as a second mother, this is done by not eating the flesh of the cow. Everything that Hindus do is linked to nature, because of this, Hindus are very close to nature. Man and woman are treated equally and Hindus believe man and woman are equal.

Hindus respect animals as love between human beings. One God has many different abilities, so they represent the 1 god in many different ways. Siva, a very famous god who destroys the bad elements in us and if worshiped, Hindus have a good life. He is also a famous religious hero. A Hindu’s target is to be sky-high and to be the best. The Aum sign means using the power of god, save the world when needed and destroy the world when needed. Dom represents children, children to aim high.

It was a very nice day.

VISIT TO THE HINDU TEMPLE – Eoin Byrne

On Wednesday 5th October year 4 went on a trip to a Hindu temple in Nottingham. As soon as we got there we had to take our shoes off as a sign of respect. It was very interesting but very quiet. First we sat down on the carpet and wrote down the things that we could see. Some men came to pray to the gods and were kneeling in front of the shrine. Later another man came and he showed us a giant shrine which had lots of gods in it and was very colourful.

Next he pointed out the pictures of the gods on the walls and told us all about them. There was Rama who we were told was the ideal king. There was also Krishna whose favourite animal was the peacock.

Later we walked around the whole of the shrine and we saw more pictures of gods in the passageway. Before we left we were given different types of fruit to eat such as bananas, apples and kiwi fruit. We were also taught the Hindi word for hello “Namaste.”

Finally we went back to school on the coach, which took a long time because of Goose Fair. The temple was very different to my church and I found the trip very interesting to see a different religion.
